The Department of English at the University of California,
Berkeley is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing
in African literatures and cultures in English. The successful
candidate will have training in African literary/cultural studies;
grounding in one or more African national, regional, and/or
diasporic literatures/cultures; and a dynamic critical approach to
the tradition(s) in which they specialize. We welcome a wide
variety of theoretical orientations and critical approaches to the
field.Tenure-track Assistant Professors at Berkeley are expected to
excel in research, teaching, and service. Elements of the position
include: implementing a program of research that culminates in the
publication of books and articles; developing and teaching
undergraduate and graduate seminars and lecture courses; mentoring
undergraduate and graduate students; supervising dissertation
research; and various administrative activities in the English
department and across the University.Berkeley English fosters an
exceptional research environment and has developed a dynamic
curriculum in our excellent graduate and undergraduate programs. A
particular opportunity of this position involves building
collaborations with field specialists in African literatures and
cultures working across campus at Berkeley. Indeed, a separate
search is currently being conducted for a comparativist specialist
in African literatures, to be jointly appointed as Assistant
Professor in the Departments of Comparative Literature and English.
