Our team partners with industry leaders in electrolysis and plant design to implement our technology at scale.Physical and chemical characterization is a key part of understanding the materials in our system and key to making technical progress. As a Sr. Materials Characterization Engineer, you will be responsible for characterizing a wide range of materials from in-house and external suppliers. You will be the main person to develop an understanding of the base material properties of inorganic materials and implement protocols for evaluating new and existing materials. You will identify possible contamination sources, perform root cause/failure analysis, and establish acceptance criteria for key components in our electrolyzer system. In this role, you will work closely with the characterization project lead as well as cross functionally with other members of the Chemistry team.What You Will DoPerform materials characterization to properly understand key material properties of raw/inorganic materials (such as ICP, XRD, XRF, TEM, SEM-EDS, etc.)Identify new understandings of how material properties can impact reactor performanceCreate directory for raw material receivings to establish baseline standardsLiaison with suppliers to improve material quality, remove found impurities, and source possible alternativesUnderstand the hardware components of our system and each component's material propertiesAnalyze characterization data, summarize results and share with the team in a clear, organized mannerMaintain a safe and clean laboratory environmentDevelop and train other team members on SOPsWho You AreYou have 3-5 years of experience working in a materials characterization rolePhD degree or M.S. degree + 2-4 years experience or equivalent background in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related fieldYou have hands-on work experience in a materials lab including sample prep and operating materials testing equipmentStrong experience in TEM, SEM-EDS, ICP-MS/OES, XRD, and XRFExperience in electrochemistry is a plusExperience working a diverse set of materials including polymers, porous carbon, and metal alloysExperience working with raw material suppliersExperience developing and maintaining high quality control standardsExperience with design of experiments and statistical analysisAbility to work cross-functionally in a multidisciplinary team environmentExcellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to summarize data and present results effectivelyDetail-oriented with strong record-keeping, documentation and organization skillsSelf-motivated and ability to work autonomously with minimal supervisionBenefitsMedical, dental, and vision coveragePaid sick days and vacationCompetitive salary and equity compensation commensurate with experienceDiverse and inclusive work environmentWe believe that the unique contributions of each individual is the driver of our success.
