Position description
The University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a
leader to serve as the next Associate Provost for the Berkeley
Space Center (AP-BSC). The Associate Provost is a full-time faculty
director position with an underlying tenured professorial
appointment in a relevant academic discipline. External applicants
will hold an appointment in one or more of the academic departments
in the College of Engineering (COE), with the possibility of
additional joint appointments outside of COE.
The Berkeley Space Center (BSC) is a proposed, 36-acre innovation
center at NASA Ames in the heart of Silicon Valley, where academia,
private industry, and government will come together to identify,
incubate, and launch tomorrow's technological breakthroughs. The
BSC project is a public-private partnership that focuses on
connecting and leveraging the combined capabilities of government
and academic research with private industry's innovation,
entrepreneurialism, and capital in a central location designed to
foster collaboration across multiple disciplines. A number of
partnerships and research collaborations have already been
established in advance of physical development of the BSC, with
more to be explored in the near future. A more detailed overview of
the project can be found here.
Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP), the
AP-BSC will oversee the development and execution of the academic,
research, and innovation and entrepreneurship missions of the BSC.

the UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students in advancing the BSC
mission. The AP-BSC is supported in this role by an Executive
Director overseeing business development. The successful candidate
should have a demonstrated record of developing and executing
strategy for comparable projects, leading large-scale research
programs, building partnerships between industry and/or government
entities and academia.
Berkeley has a long history of excellence in teaching, research,
and service, as well as a culture that values and promotes
interdisciplinarity. The AP-BSC will engage and leverage such
strong interdisciplinary partnerships advanced through the Berkeley
Space Sciences Laboratory and other relevant campus units. Berkeley
has a compelling record of national and global engagement, and
benefits from strong relationships with industry, the Department of
Energy National Security and Science Laboratories, including the
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory , and the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration. Together with its partners,
Berkeley is actively expanding an integrative initiative in

ABOUT THE BERKELEY SPACE CENTER JOINT VENTURE
SKS Partners (SKS) was selected by UC Berkeley in 2019 as its
preferred master developer and joint venture (JV) partner to help
the campus fully realize the vision at Moffett Field. The team
successfully negotiated a long-term ground lease with NASA,
including a four-year pre-development term. Starting in 2023, SKS
will undertake due diligence to confirm infrastructure,
environmental (CEQA and NEPA), and construction requirements needed
to fulfill the vision. UC Berkeley and SKS envision a multi-phase
development of approximately 1.4 million built square feet on
36.2-acres of vacant land. In order to make the Moffett Field
Project a reality, the University and SKS formed a JV, owned
jointly by the Regents of the University of California and SKS.
