Project Director, Cosmic Microwave Background Stage 4 (CMB-S4)
Project The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is
seeking an experienced scientific leader with an international
reputation, significant management experience and an outstanding
record of accomplishment to serve as the Project Director for the
Cosmic Microwave Background Stage 4 (CMB-S4) project. CMB-S4 is
envisioned as a multi-agency, multi-site project that will deploy
and operate 500,000 superconducting detectors on multiple
millimeter wave telescopes to deliver transformative discoveries in
fundamental physics, cosmology, astrophysics, and astronomy. With a
total project cost estimate of more than $600M, execution of the
CMB-S4 project will involve contributions from multiple national
labs and universities. Reporting to the Associate Laboratory
Director for Physical Sciences at Berkeley Lab, the CMB-S4 Project
Director is responsible and accountable for the successful
execution of the CMB-S4 project within the approved cost, schedule
and technical scope. This includes selection of technical and
project staff, oversight of system requirements and flow-down to
technical designs, implementation of effective project management
systems, cost controls and schedules, identification and mitigation
of project risks, and coordination of internal and external peer
reviews. The Project Director will be the primary point of contact
for the CMB-S4 project with the federal agencies, and will be
expected to maintain transparent and effective communication with
line management, federal agency sponsors, the CMB-S4 collaboration,
the scientific community, and other stakeholders. The Project
Director will also ensure that all necessary and appropriate
environment, health and safety (EHS) requirements are integrated
into the project execution plan and that all project activities are
conducted in a safe and environmentally sound manner.--
Qualifications: Significant experience and demonstrated competence
in the management of complex scientific projects. Ph.D. or
equivalent education/experience in physics, astronomy or a related
field desired. Recognized as a respected expert and leader with an
internationally recognized record of research and/or management
accomplishment. Significant and successful leadership experience in
working with large groups of multidisciplinary scientists and
engineers, funding agencies, universities, national laboratories
and international and/or private partners.-- Demonstrated ability
to formulate effective strategic directions for complex projects
and experience in effective management and administrative oversight
and creativity in decision making and problem solving. Strong
interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to interact
at the highest level of management, both internally and externally,
in a constructive and collaborative manner and in a way that
appropriately represents the project and the host Laboratory.

CMB-S4 project is an at-will, career position that is appointed by
and serves at the discretion of the Laboratory Director. A parallel
appointment as a Senior Scientist/Engineer may be considered.
Full-time, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. Classification
will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and
abilities. This position is contingent on the successful completion
of a background check. This position is subject to the financial
disclosure requirements of the California Political Reform Act of
1974. The successful candidate for this position will be required
to file financial interest statements upon assuming this position,
annually while holding this position, and when leaving this
position. Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley
National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Extensive travel to
collaborating institutions, funding agencies and other project
