Filled Departmental Overview The Division of Computing, Data
Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new structure
at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation
transformation. The Division brings together faculty, researchers,
and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social
and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data
science and redefining the research university for the digital age.
Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital
revolution affects equity and opportunity-and building the capacity
to respond to these challenges. CDSS connects the Data Science
Education Program, School of Information, Departments of Electrical
Engineering & Computer Sciences and Statistics, the Berkeley
Institute for Data Science, and the Data Science Commons. The
Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data
science education program, including classes and programs serving
thousands of undergraduate students a year.
CDSS is committed to hiring and developing staff who want to work

This position serves as the strategic communications and marketing
partner for the Associate Provost and Dean (APD) and the division.
The incumbent works as a member of a collaborative senior
leadership team APD, Associate Deans, Chief of Staff/Chief
Administrative Officer (COS/CAO), Chief Development Officer (CDO),
and Department Chairs. Responsibilities 25% Manages comprehensive
communications programs for a large and innovative academic
division with a significant communications program and complex
communications requirements. As a liaison to campus public affairs,
media relations, government affairs, and development units, works
closely with colleagues to represent CDSS in strategic initiatives
of campus-wide importance. May include arranging or participating
in interviews, meetings, tours, or working closely with high-level
campus professionals on special projects. Serves as primary point
of contact for public relations activities, including event
planning and dignitary visits. Ensures CDSS is considered a trusted
partner and is well represented and working collaboratively across
both internal and external organizations. 20% Works with
departmental administration to create, develop, and implement
comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans
and / or projects. Supports communications regarding significant
fundraising efforts including a major push with UCSF for the
development of a joint program, fund raising for the new Data Hub
building, and other initiatives. Oversees or creates presentation
materials for the APD and senior team that need to be handled
quickly and professionally. 20% Provides advice and counsel to
departmental administration on all aspects of communications,
including strategic planning, effective messaging, problem
resolution, etc. Establishes relationships with industry journals
(i.e. Wired) and prepares articles for publication Establishes
relationships with major publications such as NYT, Washington Post,
LA TImes, Wall Street Journal and markets articles to them
regarding CDSS. Serves as spokesperson and advocate for CDSS.
Cultivates positive relationships with journalists to assure
optimal visibility for the CDSS and its programs, including placing
or "pitching" stories of interest to the media. Leads the
development and placement of interesting stories that enhance the
public's understanding and appreciation of CDSS's contributions.
15% Provides leadership for and effectively manages a professional
staff responsible for producing a variety of communication pieces
in a variety of venues or mediums including written, visual and
electronic communications. Recruits, trains, supervises, evaluates,
and takes disciplinary action as necessary for the team. Sets team
priorities and plans workflow. Receives requests for communications
support from APD, COS/CAO, and other members of the leadership
team. Assigns to projects. Recommends opportunities for
professional development for staff. Reviews, guides, and approves
work at various stages of completion. Leads various teams
brainstorming sessions. 10% Ensures production of high quality
products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget
and time constraints. Manages multi-channel marketing plans and
projects, from simple to complex. Assists in long and short term
strategic planning for CDSS. Utilizes internal as well as external
resources in the delivery of the above, with the goal of increasing
visibility and promoting CDSS's and the University's positive
identity locally, nationally, and globally. 10% Manages staff
assigned responsibilities for producing a variety of communication
pieces in a variety of venues including written, visual and / or
electronic communications. Manages communications for the division
including a team of staff and contractors responsible for website,
writing articles (technical and otherwise), and creating
presentation materials as needed by the APD and senior leadership
team. Oversees videographers and creation of videos. Required
