The Opportunity We are looking for a dedicated, skilled, warm, Executive Director to carry out and enhance Step Ones vision for early education and our community. Curiosity, heart, empathy, attentiveness, and initiative are all qualities needed for this position. The Executive Director must lead with organization, flexibility, understanding, trust, collaboration, and intuition. This position is responsible for leading all aspects of the school on behalf of the Board of Trustees, in close coordination with the Program Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES Embody Step Ones values by leading with love and empathy, celebrating diversity, and proactively addressing bias and inequity. Supervise the direction of the school program, ensuring that the curriculum, student enrollment, and hiring of faculty and staff adheres to the vision of the school. Oversee faculty and staff, including hiring, curriculum development, classroom resources, professional development, and accountability to ensure that teachers and faculty feel supported and encouraged to grow in their role at Step One. Coordinate facilities and site operations for the school to ensure a safe space for the Step One community to work and play. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Create and coordinate internal communications that encourage clarity of objectives and transparent decision making. Cultivate an open door policy that encourages all members of the community to provide feedback and suggestions. Work closely with the Board of Trustees (Board) to oversee implementation of the strategic plan. Keep the Board advised of any relevant issues regarding the overall health of the school, including regular updates on budget, facilities, program, and staffing. Direct and manage the school budget, including enrollment/recruitment efforts and cost controls. Oversee school fundraising efforts, including donor relations, annual fund coordination, larger campaigns, and events. Oversee the family development program for the school, including regular outreach and engagement with families as well as coordinating with the Program Director to facilitate school events. Serve as the liaison for the Berkeley community and beyond, including coordinating with the City of Berkeley, local agencies, other professional groups, and regional early childhood community, and maintain neighbor relations. Ensure that all program quality standards are met, including accreditation and licensing. Oversee disaster preparedness measures, including coordination and compliance with local and state agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS M.A. in Early Childhood Education (or equivalent) Meets California Site Supervisor Permit qualifications 10-plus years of experience working in early childhood education with a proven ability to work in the classroom and work with a nonprofit Board. Experience supporting faculty in a variety of ways such as administrative support, curriculum development, conflict resolution, and resource allocation. Demonstrated business acumen to oversee budget and fundraising activities. Experience in hiring and HR related activities. Strong leadership capabilities. Dedication to inclusion and diversity and experience implementing an anti-bias curriculum. A kind, open heart with a passion for guiding young learners.
