Departmental Overview
The Office of Environment, Health & Safety's (EH&S) mission is
to provide guidance and services to the campus community that
promote health, safety, and environmental stewardship.EH&S is a
highly dynamic, fast paced, committed organization focused on
promoting workplace safety and environmental protection for the
campus community. We are comprised of many scientific, technical,
and administrative professionals, working in an evolving, learning,
and sometimes challenging environment with a unified goal of

mission.Position SummaryThe Senior Certified Industrial Hygienist
(CIH) provides direct safety and health services with an emphasis
on industrial hygiene (IH) practices, especially the anticipation,
recognition, and control of health hazards with particular
consideration of substitution, engineering, administrative, and PPE
solutions.
The CIH provides these IH and consultation services to campus
partners in support of health and safety programs, policies,
consensus standards, and best practices. Through memorandum of
understanding, the CIH may also provide these services to other
University of California locations, and the UC Office of the
President.

Responsibilities
Serves as highest-level organization subject matter expert in
Industrial Hygiene:
- Acts as delegated representative of senior management to
campus, system-wide, local government, state and federal levels of
authority
- Participates on campus and system-wide committees as the Sr.
Industrial Hygienist and/or EH&S resource
- Provides input to state and federal regulators for writing and
revisions of regulations
- Advises departments, researchers, and support staff on
industrial hygiene requirements for proposed work and
facilities
- Creates new and complex solutions applying advanced level
knowledge/expertise of best practices within multiple technical,
professional, scientific, and applied disciplines and makes
recommendations and presentations based on accepted scientific
methodology.
- Ensures implementation of quality control procedures according
to all regulations in subject area
- Maintains professional knowledge/expertise of existing and
proposed changes in all EH&S areas, with attention to
regulations in industrial hygiene. See Governing Laws and
Regulations below.
- Applies appropriate scientific and professional standards to
recommend campus/university policies and programs and, as needed,
creates new methodologies in the following Industrial Hygiene
programs:
- Exposure assessments
- Carcinogens
- Field Research Safety
- Writes and updates manuals and proceduresMonitors compliance,
prevents hazards, and supports safety programs, including:
- Performing workplace evaluations
- Assigning personal protective equipment
- Specifying proper engineering controls
- Providing training
- Participating in work groups with other campus departments to
address specific health- or safety-related issues.As a Senior
Certified Industrial Hygienist, incumbent is the campus expert and
EH&S technical lead on campus exposure assessment strategy and
supports implementation of the campus Carcinogen Use Program:
- Provides direction to others within the Health & Safety team on
industrial hygiene monitoring projects, methodology, and
interpretation of results
- Modifies campus programs to accommodate changes in applicable
laws, regulations, and other contributing factors
- Conducts exposure monitoring for departments across campus
- Manages exposure monitoring database and runs reports to
identify gaps; prioritizes assessments based on shared data with
other UC campusesSupports required reporting to Cal/OSHA
- In collaboration with the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO),
develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and training specific
research labs handling carcinogens regulated by Title 8 Section
5209
- Reviews literature and protocols to support use of alternative
materials in laboratories, and promoting disposal/substitution and
best practices
- Modifies campus program to accommodate changes in applicable
laws, regulations, and other contributing factorsLeads the EH&S
Field Research Safety Program relevant to work, research and
teaching outdoors and in remote locations, including:
- Conducting and reviewing field hazard assessments
- Providing technical consultation to field researchers,
instructors, and staff regarding development of compliant and
effective field safety plans
- Coordinating outreach related to travel-related issues in
partnership with UCOP, Risk Services, UHS and other campus
partners, e.g. regarding travel restrictions, security assessments,
public health outbreaks, natural disasters, etc.
- Participating in campus and systemwide UC field safety
workgroups
- Providing Cal/OSHA Heat Illness Prevention training and
Wildfire Smoke training; periodically coordinating wilderness first
aid training for field researchers and employees
- Coordinating all EH&S outreach and visits to UC
Berkeley-managed field stations
- Promoting travel registration
- Modifying campus program to accommodate changes in applicable
laws, regulations, and other contributing factors
- Drives (university) vehicles in fulfillment of job
responsibilitiesProvides technical support and serves as back up to
Health and Safety Team members on various issues, including:
- Sanitation
- Hearing Conservation
- Respiratory Protection
- Controlled Substances
- Biosafety and Animal Research
- Conducts peer reviews of reports, updates and revises written
programs
- Serves as an alternate to faculty research oversight committees
in the areas of animal and biosafetyStaff development: works on
professional committees and assignments, participates in
professional training and attends relevant conferences, and/or is
mentored or coached on a formal or informal basisPerforms other
duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
- On a rotational basis during business hours, provide industrial
hygiene services for emergency indoor air quality calls and
industrial hygiene support to large, highly hazardous or unfamiliar
chemical spills
- May be assigned temporary supervision of Health and Safety Team
upon designation by the Associate Director
- Supervises graduate student interns and undergraduate student
technicians, ensuring that student work practices meet regulatory
requirements, fulfill client expectations and needs, and are
conducted in an efficient, professional and safe manner.
- Completes and maintains compliance on campus/systemwide
training requirements, as well as any necessary per role.
- At the request of campus management (EH&S Director, VC
Research/Administration, UCPD Chief, or designated alternate), must
be available in a campus disaster or campus hazardous material
release/threatened release, to serve in the appropriate emergency
response role based upon expertise and, where applicable,
designated departmental role. At a minimum, this includes the role
as Safety Officer in the campus EOC.
- May be assigned as a Member of Dedicated Urgent Response Team
(DURT). If assigned to serve as a Lead Responder, the incumbent
must meet the specific requirements of the DURT program as outlined
in the EH&S Urgent Response Support Program Guidelines. These
include occupational physical qualifications and a medical baseline
that is required upon assignment.
- Provide technical support to the DURT program by serving as a
Lead Responder in the regular rotation, 24/7, every 6-8 weeks, or
more frequently as needed.
- Must be accessible by UCPD via telephone and readily available
to respond on-scene to emergencies (e.g., a chemical spill) during
business and non-business hours. Must be within one hour of campus
and may not engage in activity that will affect the ability to
respond.
Required Qualifications
- Certified Industrial Hygienist certificate required
- Three years of professional experience and/or equivalent
experience as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent
experience / training
- Advanced or expert knowledge / understanding of broad range of
EH&S fields and familiarity with all EH&S fields.
- Interdisciplinary understanding of the physiochemical,
biological and medical sciences and their practical application to
sanitation issues and public health programs.
- Advanced or expert knowledge and skill in applying and
interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and
related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommend
organization policy.
- Knowledge about public health interventions that protect
community or workplace populations from unhealthful exposures to
hazardous materials, infectious disease, physical and general
safety hazards.
- Knowledge and ability to interpret technical regulations and
guidelines governing sanitation, carcinogens and controlled
substances.
- Advanced analytical and organizational skills to organize,
prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within
budget and time constraints.
- Demonstrated strong written, verbal and interpersonal
communications skills, including advanced political acumen and
skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a
highly political environment.
- Advanced skill to effectively represent the organization to
state and federal authorities, and community groups.
- Demonstrated experience and skill in mentoring or overseeing
the work of other EH&S technical and professional staff.
- Demonstrated skill to appropriately use technology and relevant
scientific equipment as required.
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively in a
team structure with other professionals.
- Demonstrated experience and skill to respond to emergencies and
critical situations appropriately in a research setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Microbiology, Industrial Hygiene, Public
Health, Environmental Health or similar field
- Demonstrated knowledge of Governing Laws and Regulations:
- Title 8 California Code of Regulations
- Applicable sections of the California Fire Code as it relates
to laboratory ventilation, toxic gases, hazardous materials and
other laboratory safety issues
- California Retail Food Code
- National Institute of Health Guidelines for Research Involving
Recombinant DNA Molecules
- Center for Disease Control and Prevention Biosafety in
Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time career position with up to 40% remote/hybrid
eligibility, depending on business needs. This position is eligible

Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the
compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary
outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range
takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in
making compensation decisions including but not limited to
experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and
certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and
organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be
offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.
Salary offers are determined based on final candidate
qualifications and experience. The budgeted salary range that the
University reasonably expects to pay for this position is
$121,000-$141,500.
