Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARYCIIS seeks adjunct lecturers for select courses offered in our hybrid Human Sexuality PhD Program for Academic Year 2025-2026 semester. Course descriptions are found below. Please indicate which course/s you are interested in teaching and your qualifications for teaching the course/s in your cover letter. We may consider adjuncts to teach more than one course, especially the Understanding Research and Methodology I courses listed below. Find out more about the doctoral program in the Human Sexuality Department here: https://www.ciis.edu/academics/graduate-programs/human-sexuality/about-the-phdAdjunct faculty are expected to deliver rigorous, critically informed doctoral-level instruction in alignment with CIIS's mission and the Human Sexuality Department's interdisciplinary and justice-oriented pedagogy. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Preparing course content in coordination with provided syllabi and working with instructional designers to develop asynchronous materials on the Canvas learning platform.
• Delivering in-person instruction across three extended weekend residencies per semester (typically 3-4-hour sessions scheduled Thursday-Sunday; exact dates are provided well in advance).
• Facilitating synchronous online sessions and maintaining an active presence in the online classroom environment.
• Providing detailed, timely feedback on student assignments and assessments.
• Holding virtual office hours and maintaining responsive communication with students throughout the term.
• Supervising and collaborating with a graduate teaching assistant, where applicable.
• Participating in department meetings and related activities as requested.Adjunct appointments are contractual per course and do not carry the service or governance expectations of full-time faculty roles.COURSE DESCRIPTIONSThis course is dedicated to understanding how social scientists and scholars in related fields and disciplines analyze, interpret, and make sense of the social world. We will begin with broad questions about knowledge production that undergird our approach to any academic inquiry. We will next learn about and practice qualitative and quantitative research methods, including digital content analysis, interviewing, and survey research. We will consider how a study benefits from or is constrained by a mixed methodology approach. This course explores epistemologies and research methods as they pertain to sexuality studies. We will ask how theory and standpoints shape the kinds of research questions we ask, the types of materials we use, and how we define our relationships with our research participants/subjects. We will explore questions like: what counts as evidence? How might we approach the issues of subject and subjectivity? What is the relationship between researcher and subject? What key questions guide our research decisions?HSX 7237 Methodology I (3 units) - Fall 2025This course examines core concepts in quantitative methods and reviews the basic steps used in constructing a rigorous, empirically valid research study on sexuality and/or gender. It reviews the purpose of an institutional review board (IRB)/human subjects committee and the existence of institutional and independent IRBs. The course grounds technical learning with an examination of scientific positivism by drawing upon critiques from anticolonialist, queer, and feminist scholars. Students apply these concepts and theories to critically assess statistically-based evidence. This course introduces students to quantitative methodology focusing on survey methods to conduct research on sexuality related topics. This course introduces both the debates about what should "count" and why, as well as what constitutes "good" research. We will review the ethics involved in conceptualizing and conducting research quantitatively, including the history and importance of Institutional Review Boards (IRB) for the protection of human research subjects. The course will review some of the basic elements of good survey design and extend this by learning how to conduct basic descriptive and inferential statistical analysis with an existing set of survey data using SPSS analytical software. Qualtrics and SPSS will be provided to students for use during the course. Qualitative approaches to research will be covered in the companion course to this one: HSX 7238 Methodology II.HSX 7229 Sexual Function & Practices (3 units) - Spring 2026This course represents the core knowledge that students are required to engage in about sexuality practices and behaviors to be competent in the field. Topics covered include biopsychosocial developmental models of sexuality and gender identity, sociocultural and familial influences, LGBTQQIA identities and experiences, diversities of sexual expression, sexual anatomy and physiology, sexually associated infections, contraception and barrier methods, arousal and orgasm, and sexual health and pleasure. This course will be addressed from an inclusive and sex-positive perspective. This course is aligned to these American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) core knowledge areas: B-I, and M. For more details, visit www.aasect.org.

  REQUIREMENTSMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, or equivalent) in a field directly relevant to the course content (e.g., sexuality studies, behavioral/health studies, biostatistics, psychology, public health, gender studies, cultural studies, education, critical race studies, sociology, anthropology, or a related discipline).
  • Demonstrated scholarly engagement with sexuality/sex, gender, or related expertise
  • Record of experience teaching graduate-level courses in hybrid or online formats.
  • Experience designing and running courses in online learning management software like CANVAS, Blackboard, etc.
  • Ability to travel to CIIS in San Francisco for three required teaching weekends per semester; travel support is available for faculty located outside the Bay Area.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Record of teaching, research, or practice at the doctoral level in topics related to sexuality, sex, and gender.
    • Demonstrated expertise in critical sexuality studies through teaching, scholarship, and/or application
    • Experience mentoring doctoral students or serving on dissertation committees.
    • Broad training in the field of sexuality studies and/or critical sexuality studies
    • Demonstrated engagement with critical theory, decolonial, queer, feminist, race, or other critical theoretical frameworks.
    • Familiarity with digital learning environments, including experience designing and facilitating graduate coursework using learning management systems such as Canvas or Blackboard.
    • Commitment to transformative pedagogy that affirms diverse lived experiences and promotes academic rigor through anti-oppressive and inclusive teaching practices.Occasional work performed alone with ability to work remotely from time-to-time.       Additional Information:
      COMPENSATION AND CONTRACTThis is a semester-based, part-time adjunct faculty position. Adjunct faculty are hired on a per-course basis, with rates ranging from $31.05-52.25 per hour for adjunct lecturer ranks of: instructor, lecturer, senior lecturer, or professor. Compensation is based on course load and determined according to CIIS's adjunct faculty pay scale, commensurate with experience and qualifications.Adjunct faculty teaching 9 units or fewer are not eligible for benefits. Teaching assignments are contingent upon course enrollment minimums and programmatic needs.
